Abstract

This book is about the tiny sounds of the world, and listening to them, the minute signals that are clues to who and where we are. A very small sound, given the context of its history, becomes hugely significant, and even an imagined sound in a picture becomes almost a voice. By speaking a name, we give a person back to the world, and a breath, a sigh, a laugh or a cry need no language. A phoneme is the start of all stories, and were we able to tune ourselves to the subtleties of the natural world, we might share the super-sensitivity of members of the bird and animal kingdom to sense the message in the apparent silence. Mind hears sound when it perceives an image; the book will appeal to sonic and radio practitioners, students of sound, those working in the visual arts, and creative writers.

Abstract

J.A. Fuller Maitland (1856-1936), whose Schumann in the Novello 'Great Musicians' series is also reissued in this series, had a wide-ranging interest in music. He was music critic of The Times for 22 years, was the editor of the second edition of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, prepared an edition of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, and also worked on Purcell and on folk song. This book, published in 1894, surveys the then current state of German music, with essays on Brahms, Bruch, Goldmark and Rheinberger. Bruckner is mentioned as a 'Little Master', and Richard Strauss appears in the final chapter, entitled 'New Paths (?)' but the surprise for present-day readers is that the composer fulsomely claimed by Fuller Maitland as the natural successor to Wagner, Cyrill Kistler, is now almost completely unknown.

Abstract

The Contemporary study of musical arts, Volumes 1 to 5 is a series that emphasizes the intellectual security of cultural knowledge orientation in the study and research of the musical arts for students and educators that could engage in global knowledge discourse and practice with original cultural-mental integrity. The “Need” that introduces the series argues that “theoretical content, philosophical and psychological foundations of creativity and practice, the nature and principles of musical arts theatre, and research and historical process [should] derive in essence from the original African intellectual perspective about the sense and meaning of music – indigenous to contemporary.” The contents discuss what is Africa-generic at the sub-structural level about musical arts conceptualization and practice. Volume 4 is a collection of scholarly essays, some in narrative style, that discusses specific musical arts topics, basic to African indigenous knowledge grounding, in the disciplinary fields of philosophical illuminations, theoretical explorations, indigenous concept of drama, contemporary musical arts education including dance education, science and technology, and music and health. These volumes on the study of the musical arts in Africa represent the commitment of the Centre for Indigenous Instrumental Music and Dance Practices of Africa (CIIMDA) to generate literature and performance repertory grounded in indigenous African musical arts knowledge systems for local and global educational, research and concert engagements.

Abstract

Performing al-Andalus explores three musical cultures that claim a connection to the music of medieval Iberia, the Islamic kingdom of al-Andalus, known for its complex mix of Arab, North African, Christian, and Jewish influences. Jonathan Holt Shannon shows that the idea of a shared Andalusian heritage animates performers and aficionados in modern-day Syria, Morocco, and Spain, but with varying and sometimes contradictory meanings in different social and political contexts. As he traces the movements of musicians, songs, histories, and memories circulating around the Mediterranean, he argues t
